Handling the Guilt

My colleague, Mary Lynn Mitcham blogged about guilt being another layer you put on each morning. I’m wondering how all you smart, savvy moms “Out There” handle the guilt?
Whether you have a two-month-old, a 2-year-old, a 12-year-old or a 20-year old, the guilt never seems to go away. I write this on a day when my 11-year-old is home from school because she had to have three teeth pulled. After coddling her and holding her hand, giving her Tylenol, then soothing her as I set her up in front of the TV, I had to leave for work. Part of me knows there’s not much I can do to ease her discomfort, yet the other part just wants to “be there” for her. I handle my guilt by making promises. Tonight, it will be vanilla ice cream. And of course at least $5 bucks (if not more) from The Tooth Fairy. How do YOU do it? (And be honest; bribery can be a valuable “method.”)

I go to work. I have no choice. I cannot take a vacation or sick day every time my child wants/needs to stay home from school. I usually make them go in, unless I can tell they are REALLY sick. Then I check on them during the day and go home for lunch with some soup or something. And I try to minimize the guilt – there’s no way to avoid it completely, but it doesn’t help the situation at all, so I try to ignore it.
