Mary Lynn Mitcham
Mary Lynn Mitcham, the editor-in-chief of InTown Westchester, is new to the mom scene. Her son, Owen, was born on the Fourth of July, 2006. Needless to say, she’s still trying to figure out how to get herself—and her son—dressed and fed and still make it on time to work. Before she joined InTown and motherhood, she worked as a senior editor at Travel Holiday magazine and has freelanced for several publications including Parenting, Adoptive Families, Bridal Guide, Boating, Men’s Fitness, and more. She lives in Westchester with her new baby and her husband, Adam.

My husband and I took my son Owen away last week. The plan was to take 10 whole days to 1.) visit friends in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and 2.) take in the sites around Savannah, Georgia, which we’d drive to from Myrtle Beach. Despite lost luggage and runway delays, visiting our friends in South [...]

The other day, I gave my son his first time-out. Granted, Owen is just nine months old, but he had it coming. We were playing on the floor and he reached up and hit me. I looked at him and said, “No, you have to be nice.” Then I took his hand and illustrated nice [...]

I just got chills reading about the bomb scare in Mount Kisco. According to The Journal News, the complex at 100 South Bedford Road was evacuated this morning due to bomb threats. It’s scary enough to think about something like this happening so close to home—didn’t we just get through 911?— but this one hit [...]

I’ve never been much for trends. Bell-bottoms never made their way into my closet, same for round-toed shoes, and so far, I’m not planning on wearing a lot of white this summer. But lately, the “eating healthy trend” has got me thinking, particularly when it comes to my baby. Organic food, right now, is big. [...]

When I was pregnant people—women mostly—warned me about many things: sleep deprivation, diapers, expenses, those last five pounds that are so hard to lose. But what nobody really touched on is the fact that when you become a mom you essentially become a mule. The days of traveling light are way behind you. On an [...]

A friend of mine told me the funniest story. She had a job interview—a second interview—last week and apparently there was some miscommunication in setting up the appointment. Anyway, HR called her at the last minute to say, “Can you come in now?” She said, “On one condition—I have to bring my newborn baby.” How’s [...]

I was at a family gathering this weekend and Judy, one of my husband’s cousins, asked me an interesting question: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve gotten as a mom? In the past nine months, I’ve gotten quite a bunch. For me, I’d have to say the best advice is: Do what works for [...]

Thanks for all your great thoughts on Owen’s biting incident. Many of you feel so passionately that this never should have happened—Owen just should not have been bitten by another baby at daycare. While I agree, I can’t help but feel, life just isn’t like that. Things happen that shouldn’t all the time and one [...]

Yesterday, I dropped Owen off at daycare and he cried, which he doesn’t usually do. So at about 11:45, I called to check in on him and see how he was doing. His teacher responded, “He’s fine, but I was going to call you, too.” Apparently Owen had been bitten by another child at daycare. [...]
